Seven Tips when Shopping for a Divorce or Custody Attorney

On Behalf of | Jun 19, 2016 | Divorce

How do you know a divorce or custody attorney is right for you?

You have made the difficult decision to seek a divorce or to bring the other parent to court over a custody dispute. There are a lot of attorneys out there and you start to interview them.

1. Do your research. Before you make that appointment, see if there are any online reviews. What are other people saying about this lawyer?

2. Don’t stop with the reviews, analyze the website, read the blogs if any and if possible watch any video the attorney has made.

3. Schedule an initial appointment. Most divorce or custody lawyers offer a free initial consultation.

4. Prepare for that appointment. Bring in a list of questions you would like the attorney to answer.

5. Once you are in the attorney’s office, ask yourself is he or she really listening to you and addressing your concerns. I myself have strong ideas about how to approach each case and sometimes I have been accused of not letting someone finish their concerns before jumping in with my suggestions. I continually have to stop myself, slow down and really listen.

6. Once your concerns have been addressed and the attorney has laid out an action plan, make sure you know who will be handling your case. In larger firms, your case may be sent to an Associate and you have a right to know that Associate’s experience. You might even ask to meet that Associate if possible.

7. Finally, don’t hesitate to get detailed information as to how much you will have to put down for the attorney to take your case, what his or her hourly rate is and whether you will get monthly regular detailed billing statements which are required by law. You can also ask for a range of how much your divorce or custody case might cost although this is always speculative.

These are just a few considerations in choosing a divorce or custody lawyer. The most important thing is to go with your gut.
