Regaining a sense of control through the divorce process

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching, many married couples throughout the Chicagoland area are rushing to finalize dinner plans and find the perfect gift or card for a spouse. For some spouses, however, Valentine's Day and the messages of love and romance that accompany it serve as a painful reminder of the unhappy state of their marriage.

Whether an individual has already taken steps to file for divorce or is planning to do so, it's important to prepare as much as possible for the process. One of the first issues an individual would be wise to address is to ensure that he or she has a strong support system.

The divorce process can be difficult and, no matter how much an individual wants a divorce, there will still be times when one will likely feel overwhelmed by the process and the many changes that accompany it. It's imperative, therefore, to not only surround oneself with loving and supportive family and friends, but also a supportive divorce attorney who has one'€s best interest at heart.

Providing for one's emotional needs helps ensure an individual has the capacity to focus on the financial aspects of the divorce settlement process. Taking action to gain a clear picture of one's current and future financial needs helps an individual set goals when entering into the settlement process.

Illinois is an equitable distribution state, meaning that numerous factors are taken into account when dividing marital assets and property in an attempt to arrive at a "fair and equitable" distribution of such. When approaching the settlement process, it's important to have a clear sense of what one must and hopes to accomplish with regard to securing certain assets and marital property.

While there's no secret recipe for making divorce easier, an individual who is proactive and actively participates in the process will feel more in control of their future and is more likely to secure a favorable settlement.
